Start testing EUDI Wallets with Hopae Connect

Bart van der Geest

Germany’s d-you and Denmark’s AltID Wallet are now available in the Hopae Connect sandbox. Our customers can explore wallet-based identity verification and test their integration through a single API, without arranging their own access to each national sandbox.

As Europe prepares for the rollout of European Digital Identity Wallets, these environments offer businesses a practical way to understand the user experience and begin preparing their services.

What are EUDI Wallets?

European Digital Identity Wallets, or EUDI Wallets, are being introduced under the revised eIDAS Regulation, commonly known as eIDAS 2.0. They are designed to let people identify themselves, store digital credentials and share selected information with public and private services across the EU.

The aim is to give users greater control over the information they share. Depending on the credential and service, this could mean presenting identity details or demonstrating a specific attribute, such as being above a certain age.

Why businesses should start preparing

Under the European Digital Identity Framework, EU Member States must make EUDI Wallets available by the end of 2026. National rollout plans and the availability of individual features will vary.

By December 2027, specified private-sector services must also accept compliant EUDI Wallets when users choose to use them. This includes services requiring strong user authentication for online identification under law or contract, subject to the regulation’s scope and exemptions. The requirement does not apply to every business.

For businesses preparing to accept wallets, early testing can help answer practical questions: What will customers see when asked to share information? How will the verification flow fit into an existing onboarding journey? How will the application handle the result?

Meet d-you and AltID

d-you is Germany’s state EUDI Wallet, developed by the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations (SPRIND) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernisation (BMDS). It is designed to support digital identification and the presentation of digital credentials. Germany currently plans to make the first version available in early 2027, with functionality expanding over time.

AltID is Denmark’s official digital identity and credentials app, provided by the Danish Agency for Digital Government (DIGST) as part of Denmark’s EUDI Wallet rollout. Its current version supports a photo ID card and proof of age for use in Denmark, with further credentials and EU-wide use planned.

These initiatives are progressing towards the broader EUDI Wallet ecosystem. Their current test environments should be understood in the context of that ongoing development.

Test through Hopae Connect

Hopae participates in these sandboxes as an intermediary service provider and wallet verifier. We provide our customers with access to the test app and a platform to verify wallet presentations, so they can begin testing through Hopae Connect without obtaining separate sandbox access themselves.

Customers can use the test app to explore the wallet user flow, or test their own integration through the Hopae Connect API. This gives product and engineering teams a way to assess how wallet verification could fit into their service before production adoption.

Testing now also gives teams time to identify integration questions and refine their user experience as the national wallet environments develop.

From sandbox testing to production

Hopae’s support for d-you and AltID is currently sandbox-only. The functionality available for testing depends on what each national sandbox supports and may evolve as development continues.

Hopae will support these wallets in production as they roll out and become available to businesses. We will also add support for more EUDI Wallets as their public sandbox environments become available.
