Hopae Launches Digital CNH Verification
ㅣ
Diego Puentes
Hopae is proud to announce a new identity verification service on Hopae Connect: real-time verification of Brazil's digital driver's license (CNH), combining secure QR code decoding with facial biometric matching against official government sources.
One API. Full Trust.
Brazil is one of the biggest identity ecosystems in the world — with more than 200 million CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) records, over 85 million records held through the driver's license system adoption, and more than 65 million digital CNHs credentials (Carteira Nacional de Habilitação) in circulation. Hopae is now helping global and Brazilian businesses tap into this infrastructure through a single, compliant API.
What Hopae Verifies
Through Hopae Connect, businesses can now validate:
CNH QR Code Decoding — Secure, string-level decryption of the CNH's official QR code, extracting and validating key registration data including name, CPF, date of birth, mother's and father's names, license category, registration number, expiration date, first-license date, and issuing state — all read directly from the certified document, not user-entered text.
Facial Biometric Match — A live selfie is compared against the photo on file with official driver's license records, returning a similarity score and confidence rating (e.g. "very high probability") to confirm the person presenting the CNH is its rightful holder.
Cross-Institution Data Correlation — Beyond the QR code itself, decoded data is checked against Brazil's official identity institutions — including the tax authority and SENATRAN, the National Traffic Secretariat — to confirm the document and the demographic data behind it are genuine and currently valid.
This mirrors the direction of Brazil's own national identity infrastructure. The federal reference platform in this space, combines facial validation, decoding, and validation of the CNH QR code, alongside traditional registration checks such as name, date of birth, and CPF status. Hopae brings this same depth of assurance into a single, developer-friendly API.
Near-Universal Coverage
QR Codes became mandatory on all newly issued CNHs starting May 1, 2017. Under the validity rules in force at the time, the last CNHs issued without a QR Code — in April 2017 — would have expired by April/May 2022 under normal circumstances. In practical terms, this means virtually every valid CNH in Brazil today carries a QR Code, giving Hopae's verification near-universal reach across the country's driver population.
Built for High-Stakes Trust
Every workflow is designed to meet string-level of assurance (LoA), the standard required for high-stakes, regulated use cases — while remaining fully aligned with the world's leading data protection frameworks: the EU's GDPR and Brazil's own Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados (LGPD). Consent, data minimization, and privacy-by-design are built into every verification flow.
Why It Matters
Digital identity in Brazil is undergoing a generational shift, and the CNH — now digital-first for over 68 million citizens — sits at the center of it. By connecting QR code integrity checks, biometric facematch, and live validation against national institutions, Hopae gives businesses a way to confidently answer the question that matters most: is this really the person they claim to be?
Whether for regulated financial services, mobility and ride-sharing platforms, or any use case where trust is non-negotiable, Hopae's digital CNH verification unlocks secure, low-friction onboarding — replacing manual document review and photo uploads with instant, compliant, government-backed verification.
The First Step Into LATAM
This launch marks the start of Hopae's deeper push into the LATAM region — one of the most dynamic identity markets in the world. Brazil's scale and digital-identity maturity make it a natural entry point, but it's just the beginning. LATAM is home to a fast-growing set of industries hungry for reliable, compliant identity infrastructure: fintech, crypto, online gambling, and IDV providers, among others, all expanding rapidly across the region and all needing trusted, low-friction ways to verify who their users really are. Hopae intends to be the identity layer powering that next wave of growth.
